Our data is based on a Freedom of Information Request sent to all 370 councils in England, Scotland and Wales in May 2024. We asked, "what is your current predicted funding gap
by the end of the financial year 2025/26?"

We have collated responses from all 370 councils. Around two thirds of those councils provided us with the information we requested in a response to our Freedom of Information request. For those that didn’t answer the request, we searched their most recent budgetary and Medium Term Financial Strategy documents, covering the same time period, to find the information.

The figures displayed on this website are the tip of the iceberg. All councils are legally bound to balance their budget by the end of each financial year, therefore they might have already made cuts or taken money from their reserves to plug the funding gap.

This data captures just one point in time. To add to this – the vast majority of councils are facing growing levels of funding shortfalls for the financial year 2025/26 and potentially beyond unless more central government funding is forthcoming.
